Relatos de Solar Pons: August Derleth.

Solar Pons es un investigador que protagoniza una larga serie de relatos de detectives escritos por August Derleth, entre otras cosas, fundador de Arkham House y amigo personal de H.P. Lovecraft [ver: August Derleth: el creador de los Mitos de Cthulhu]

Solar Pons es una especie de homenaje a Sherlock Holmes, con quien comparte algunas características. De hecho, August Derleth leyó en su juventud que Arthur Conan Doyle ya no escribiría ningún cuento sobre el detective más famoso, e inmeditamente le escribió pidiéndole permiso para continuar su tarea. Arthur Conan Doyle respondió con cierta ironía, acaso creyendo que se trataba de otro fanático angustiado, y señaló que las historias de Holmes estaban completas y no necesitaban nuevos abordajes. Decepcionado, August Derleth decidió ir a contramano de los deseos del maestro, y a pesar de no haber estado nunca en Londres ubicó a su detective en las callejuelas de aquella ciudad.

Solar Pons, decíamos, es un homenaje a Sherlock Holmes, pero un homenaje desmesurado. August Derleth escribió más relatos de Solar Pons que Arthur Conan Doyle de Holmes. Ambos comparten un prodigioso poder de observación y deducción que les permiten elaborar hipótesis fiables en base a datos inciertos o incompletos. Y así como los relatos de Sherlock Holmes están narrados por su compañero, Watson, los cuentos de Solar Pons operan del mismo modo a través del doctor Lyndon Parker.

Lo interesante es que Solar Pons no viene a reemplazar con continuar la tarea de Sherlock Holmes, ya que el propio Sherlock Holmes habita en el mundo de Solar Pons. Efectivamente, el detective de August Derleth suele citar a Holmes, ya retirado, e incluso lo visita de tanto en tanto. En este sentido Solar Pons es un detective posterior a Sherlock Holmes, cuyos casos tienen lugar principalmente entre 1880 y 1890, mientras que los suyos se desarrollan entre 1920 y 1930. Lamentablemente, los relatos de Solar Pons han sido escasamente traducidos al español.
